To Brda region visiting world renowned wine makers

Let all your senses go wild

The buzzing of bees and morning birdsongs caress your ears while your eyes feast on the endless waves of the Brda hills adorned with a picturesque lace of castles, mansions, churches with frescos painted by famous painters, homesteads, vineyards, orchards, olive groves and even fields of lavender.

During your adventure in Goriška brda, the wine-growing hills in the west of Slovenia, you will taste a poetry of flavours, as tradition is intertwined with modern technique and all dishes incorporate homegrown herbs and seasonal produce that come to the table directly from the garden. Yes, sustainability and respect for the fruits of nature are alive and well in Brda, as you can experience at every step.

Premium wine

Make sure you don’t leave Brda without tasting the golden-yellow queen of Brda vineyards: Rebula! It has delighted the most demanding wine lovers across the world with its minerality. You can taste its enchanting spirit in all forms: in fresh wines, sparkling wines and even in more demanding, structured wines. A couple of years ago, Rebula wine by winemaker Marjan Simčič even received the award for the best wine in the world. A visit to any of the wine cellars in Brda is a special discovery: you can feel the heartbeat of vineyards, the valour of winemakers, their love and deep commitment to the earth. Every wine cellar is a piece of art that is worth seeing.

Welcoming homesteads

Friendliness, a wide smile and a warm welcome are the aces up the sleeve of people in Brda, who have opened the doors to a wide variety of Open homesteads, which you can visit without making a reservation. You will be served authentic homemade dishes, such as toči, traditional dips with prosciutto or šalam, homemade salami and other homemade meat products, frtalja egg omelettes, homemade herbs, jams, brandies and, of course, premium wine and olive oil. The table will be enveloped in the aroma of home-baked bread, rosemary, laurel, sage, and freshly picked fruit! Flavours and aromas of local homemade products will also greet you at all Slovenia Green Cuisine label holders in Brda.

Picnic under the olive tree and wine safari

Looking for an authentic experience? Choose a picnic in an olive grove for moments, completely dedicated to nature. Sitting on a blanket in the shade of olive trees will transport you back to the time of our grandfathers and grandmothers. Butterflies and bees will flutter around you, and tempting aromas of traditional Brda dishes will waft from the picnic basket. And if you are more adventurous, you should go on a tour with off-roaders, which offers you the most beautiful views of the Brda hills, the lively nature, and the busy work of the Brda farmers caring for their grapevines, and fruit and olive trees.

Land of cherries and other fruit

Brda orchards have been widely popular for a very long time; their fame reached even as far as the Russian court. Today, the fruits from Brda orchards, from cherries, persimmon and peaches to apricots, strawberries and others, are much appreciated wide and far. But, as the people from Brda say, the most delicious fruit is the one you pick yourself. When you visit Brda, do not miss the opportunity to walk through the orchards with the local fruit growers. Join the harvest and taste the fruit straight from the trees. But that’s not all that you can taste! Cooks in Brda know how to prepare homemade jams, both traditional ones and ones with a modern, herbal twist.

Honey-themed experiences

The bees will bring you the sweetness of the Brda hills. There is almost no village in Brda without at least one apiary. Visiting the beekeepers in Brda is a delightful experience, sweetened by the taste of chestnut, linden and blossom honey and a wide range of honey products. Add to that a relaxation in the apiary, accompanied by the buzzing of bees, and your memory of your adventure in Goriška brda will become even sweeter.

Lavender harvest and herbal fields

Brda is not only a land of wine, olive oil and fruit, but also a land of lavender. Lavender harvest, either in Verdani or in Breg pri Golem Brdu, is definitely an unforgettable experience. The purple colour of lavender will fill your senses while you pick it and taste it.
