City Terrace Maribor

  • MICHELIN GUIDE 2023

Adriatic cuisine under Pohorje

Indulge in gourmet pleasures with a unique view of the city of Maribor.

The City Terrace Restaurant on the fifth floor of the Hotel City Maribor is famous for its large terrace and excellent seafood cuisine. They prepare food adapted to the seasons of the year with the right feeling, and they pamper their guests with fresh catch from the Mediterranean and the best organically produced meat accompanied by top wines. Every dish has its own story, colour, flavour, shape and aroma, providing a true adventure for the senses.

Lobsters are the main stars of the offering. Chef Davorin Verlič prefers to prepare lobster with caramelised spaghetti, sweet tomatoes, shallots and clear fish broth. The speciality of the kitchen is lobster soup, which was created by accident. It happened when Davor overcooked a lobster a little bit. He didn’t want to throw away the food, and instead devoted himself to it and created a new superb dish – smoked Adriatic lobster soup. It takes as many as twenty-four hours to prepare.

Pohorje meets the sea

Although the restaurant is devoted to seafood, it also makes sure that there is also a local flavour.

For starters, you can enjoy prežganka soup with Pohorje porcini and continue with risotto with Adriatic lobster and Pohorje porcini and cauliflower. Home-made ravioli with Pag cheese sauce, Parmesan, picklegrass and Pohorje pancetta are also an original fusion. If you crave something sweet, have a slice of baked pumpkin pie with dark chocolate and Jurka grapes.

Meet the chef

A trained self-taught chef who creates fish dishes from the best ingredients

Chef Davorin Verlič advocates quality over quantity.

He swears by modern cuisine with a touch of homeliness. He enjoys preparing food and creating, he follows innovations and passes on knowledge to younger generations. After finishing a hospitality secondary school, he gained knowledge in the Šegula Restauran in his hometown of Ptuj. He was offered the position of the head chef when he was in his early twenties. He says that he is self-taught, because in the past chefs did not like to pass on their knowledge to younger colleagues. He thus learned to prepare most of the dishes he creates today himself.

He has worked in the City Terrace Restaurant for almost a decade, and he prefers to prepare fish dishes. Because he advocates quality over quantity, you will find only top ingredients on his plates.
