Most of the dishes on offer come straight from the family kitchen, since they believe that guests won’t be impressed by anything less than what they themselves enjoy.
Guesthouse Les is located in the middle of the Čatež ob Savi village, along the main road from Ljubljana to Zagreb and not far from the famous Terme Čatež spa. Grandfather Franc Les first opened a shop and bar here almost a hundred years ago, and after the war, in 1946, he and his wife opened an inn with lodgings. Their reputation for excellent homemade delicacies quickly spread among the locals, as well as across the border.
The family business was then taken over by son Franc and his wife Nasta, who still help the now third generation in charge of the inn, son Frenk and his wife Barbara. The new millennium saw a complete renovation of the premises, which is when they also fulfilled one of their long time wishes to build a traditional brick oven and start offering pizzas.
They combine modernity and tradition, with their seasonal menus also including traditional house dishes such as roasted and fried calf’s liver, blood sausage and roasted sausage with buckwheat “žganci” and cabbage, hearty mushroom soup, homemade “gluhi štruklji”, steak “piroška-style”, and many more.
They are also known for their excellent home-made potato rolls, which guests can enjoy as a stand-alone dish with cream and fried onions, or as an accompaniment to the rump steak and porcini mushroom dish. Recently, they also tried their hand at making homemade pasta, which always impresses both the youngest guests as well their parents. For dessert, they recommend the Kaiserschmarrn or “šmoren”, as they call it, and the chocolate Sacher dessert made according to Les’s grandmother’s recipe.
Since they are located on one of the main transit roads in Slovenia, their guests come from many different places. That is why they offer a wide range of other continental and Mediterranean dishes, along with drawing in guests with the aroma of freshly baked homemade bread every day. The offer of Guesthouse Les is based on selected local ingredients from nearby producers, which form the basis of their quality dishes. On their menu, you will find a la carte dishes, pizzas and brick oven dishes, and they also prepare menus for small or large groups or business guests. The excellent food is also accompanied by quality wine from local winemakers.
Under the leadership of Barbara Les and her family, an interesting range of dishes is being created
Ivanka Černelč, Majda Vovk, Majda Mlekuž, Bojana Pejkanović, Elizabeta Sušin, Nevresa Žilić and Ankica Rostohar, some of whom have been working at Guesthouse Les for more than 25 years, share a lot of love and respect for their work in the kitchen.
Each one of them plays an important role. They all drew inspiration for starting in this profession in their own way. They themselves say that cooking is not their profession but their mission.
Working together with the kitchen team, which Barbara skilfully guides on their journey, and under the watchful eye of her advisor and greatest supporter in mother Nasta, she tries to satisfy their guests in a sincere and heartfelt way.
