Marina Hotel restaurant

  • MICHELIN GUIDE 2021

Good food, good wine and a view of the sea

Izola’s Veliki trg, some twenty metres from the sea, is home to Marina Hotel with a restaurant renowned for being one of the best restaurants on the Slovenian coast.

A wisteria pergola providing pleasant shade, a view of the swaying sailing boats in the Izola harbour, and people walking on the nearby promenade. All this makes lunch or a romantic dinner on the terrace especially charming. If you want to hide from the wind in cooler months, you will be able to find space in the interior of the elegant hotel dining room.

The restaurant has a long culinary tradition and is known for its uncompromisingly traceable ingredients. You will notice that at the entrance where guests are welcomed by an interesting board stating precisely who supplied a certain ingredient. You will know that you are eating, for example, Fonda’s sea bass, Prosub’s shellfish, and cheese from Vremščica.

The staff’s professional approach, which is an additional reason for the many guests and the popularity of the restaurant, should also be highlighted.

Chef Ivica Evačić – Ivek swears by the flavours of traditional homemade Istrian and Mediterranean dishes, which win over even the most discerning guests. Cold pressed olive oil from their olive grove on the hill of Belvedere gives them a special twist.

If a day full of excellent food and wine turns into night, a bed is available nearby. Marina Hotel has 49 rooms and amenities that will make you happy the next day – from a sauna and a Jacuzzi to various types of massages.

A short and smooth path from the sea to the plate

Their principle is that everything must go to the table as soon and as authentically as possible. To this end, all of the treats from the sea are fresh and caught the same day.

Recipes are adjusted to seasons and only the best ingredients from local providers are selected. Their stars are mussels, Adriatic shrimps, octopus salad, calamari, anchovies, crabs, and of course, fresh daily catch. And everything the sea and local producers have to offer – prepared with love.

Meet the chef

He is guided by authenticity, homeliness, and love for Istria

Chef Ivica Evačić – Ivek kicked off his cooking career in Izola in 1989. Less than fifteen years later, he took over the management of the Marina Hotel restaurant and raised it to a new level.

He turned a bed and breakfast restaurant into a top à la carte gastronomic destination. He also attributes his success to the local suppliers who provide him with the best and freshest ingredients.

His approach is sustainable, as he advocates the local, seasonal, and homemade. He cooks by the principle of live cooking without any reheating, flavour enhancers or unnecessary complications. In this way, he preserves the authenticity of pure flavours.

Professional approach, sustainable development and connections, and the preservation and exploration of traditional gastronomy are the reasons why the Marina Hotel restaurant received the Michelin Guide award in 2020 and 2021.
