Otočec Castle Restaurant

  • MICHELIN GUIDE 2021

Otočec Castle is home to top culinary stories

Otočec Castle takes visitors to a fairy tale even at first sight. Located on an island in the middle of the Krka River surrounded by pristine nature, it promises a culinary experience that you will not easily forget.

A wonderful green park surrounds the castle, providing an idyllic backdrop for weddings and other festive events or just for sitting on the bench enjoying the moment.

The mighty wall hides its majesty – the castle. You can go there for some culinary indulgence or a break, as you will feel like royalty in sixteen luxurious rooms and suites with the ambience and staff that will spoil you.

A visit to the castle restaurant run by chef Nejc Ban is also majestic. Inventive dishes with exciting flavours made from home-grown ingredients from the castle garden where almost everything that they serve grows come from under his hands. Nejc seeks inspiration in Slovenian tradition, although the key factor is his imagination, with which he fuses the past and the present.

You can indulge in the majestic culinary experience in various locations inside and outside of the castle. In addition to the restaurant, the Hunter’s and Knight’s Rooms, a glass atrium, a coffee shop under the arches and the castle and garden terraces are available for large groups.

Also attractive is the ambience of the castle tower, which hosts a wine shop with esteemed Slovenian and foreign high-quality wines.

Superb dishes with exciting flavours

Chef Nejc likes uncovering the secrets of traditional Slovenian recipes he elaborates with his knowledge and endless imagination, resulting in fresh and healthy dishes characteristic of the region and suitable for the castle environment.

In the castle kitchen, dishes are prepared with prestigious ingredients, such as game, tartar, quail eggs, crayfish, morels, and others. Dishes that you must take time to learn about are provided in various combinations. Guests can choose from three, four or five-course menus. If you want to enjoy a very special culinary experience, choose the seven-course tasting menu with first-class dishes and wines.

Meet the chef

The witty culinary artist is inspired by the beauty of the castle and the milieu of Dolenjska

Chef Nejc Ban is a child of Otočec, as he worked in the castle restaurant when he was in secondary school and at university, and carried on until he got a regular job.

He sets no limits to his cuisine, since nature’s gifts in Slovenia are abundant, and everything is at your fingertips – the mountains, rivers, and the sea. Adding the splendid setting of Otočec Castle, inspiration is bound to come.

Chef Nejc follows the leading vision of the gastronomic society Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, the oldest international society to promote the art of cooking and the culture of wine drinking, while taking into account the special features of a region, whose member is the castle restaurant. “Food for Change” emphasises sustainability and care for the environment. Therefore, his plates usually contain vegetable dishes from the immediate surroundings.

The philosophy and efforts of chef Nejc Ban were also noticed by Michelin appraisers who awarded Otočec Castle Hotel Restaurant in 2020 and 2021. They were fascinated by the local specialities, ingredients, and seasonal vegetables, berries, and herbs from the castle garden, as well as the neatness of the restaurant.
