Your heart sings when you reach this farm high in the hills

There are villages far away from modern man, far away from cities. There are villages where peace and tranquillity can be found in pristine nature.

One of these villages is Zakojca, high above the Baška Grapa Valley on the slope of rounded Mt Kojca, with a view of the majestic Mt Porezen. Here you can find forests, ravines, pastures and fields, gardens and orchards, homesteads and friendly people. And here is also the Pri Flandru Tourist Farm where the couple Marija and Venčeslav Tušar opened the door of their house to their first guests as long ago as 1992. The homestead of the writer France Bevk had opened in the village a few years before and the Tušars initially offered only beverages and lunch to visitors.

More than three decades have passed since then. Marija and Venčeslav have been writing their story together with their children and grandchildren, neighbours and friends. Pri Flandru Tourist Farm has developed over the years and now also provides accommodation and various activities in addition to excellent gastronomy.

Walnut dumplings adored by France Bevk

Zakojca lives in harmony with nature. The tourist farm produces its own vegetable, fruit, beef, pork and chicken. They are proud of the honey from their own beehive and the brandy made from the tepka pears which have been growing on the farm for 200 years. The farming is done in an environmentally friendly way, without the use of toxic products. The Tušar family is pleased that other farmers in the village observe the same principles because they thus maintain healthy pastures for bees and other animals.

Their cuisine is based on home-grown produce, local and seasonal ingredients and traditional recipes prepared by grandmother Marija, who has already passed them on from her mother Ivanka to her children and grandchildren. Among many delicious dishes, they prepare risen walnut dumplings, which were also enjoyed by the famous Slovenian writer France Bevk when visiting his birthplace. The family is proud of their exceptional lovage soup with croutons, homemade želodec (cured meat product) and minced lard.

Who creates your meal

Genuine homely cooking

Passing on tradition, knowledge and experience

Housekeeper Marija Tušar and her daughter-in-law Katarina cooperate in the kitchen. The former makes sure that the recipes from her childhood are not forgotten and passes them on to the younger generation. Tušar has attended many cooking courses during her lifetime, and she still enjoys attending workshops on old and new cooking methods.

Dedication to the kitchen and tradition has been inspiring her for three decades. Tušar has collected many stories over the years. She has dreamed many times at night that a bus full of guests is waiting at the doorstep, but the soup on the stove has not yet boiled.
