Best restaurants in Maribor

Best restaurants in Maribor, as selected by the Michelin Guide

Maribor was named Europe's Best Culinary Destination 2023, beating even the gastronomic superpowers of Rome and Paris. A selection of the best restaurants can also be found in the Michelin Guide.

A Michelin star is the ultimate achievement and a testament to gastronomic excellence. Near Maribor, a Michelin star shines in Zgornja Kungota. There, at Hiša Denk, chef Gregor Vračko and his team create true culinary experiences. Vračko blends and combines modern gastronomic techniques with traditional, local flavours, family heritage and authentic, adventurous approaches. He is passionate about drawing on the treasure trove of the region’s traditions to create his unique cuisine, while using the past as inspiration to build a bridge between history and his vision of the future. Each dish that emerges from Gregor’s skilful hands is a true work of art, exuding a remarkable harmony of flavours, textures and visual appeal.

Exceptional flavours, local traditions and bold aesthetics of the best restaurants in Maribor

Three restaurants in Maribor have been recommended by Michelin, the most extravagant of which is the one on the other, right side of the river Drava. Some even say it’s the most extravagant restaurant in Slovenia. David Vračko, the younger brother of the aforementioned Gregor, works in Maribor’s Pobrežje district. In his restaurant, Mak, a true spectacle awaits you, an easily enjoyed but far from easily forgotten culinary experience. Mak is the ideal place to spend a few hours in pleasant company while the show brought to you by the Surprise Menu unfolds, because Mak is not just a restaurant, but also a theatre. So forget everything you know about restaurants before you enter.

On the left side of the river Drava, right next to it, the City Terrace restaurant rises, inviting you to its large terrace and excellent seafood cuisine. The food is prepared with real flair, adapted to the seasons, and guests are treated to fresh catches from the Mediterranean, the best organic meats and fine wines. The specialty of chef Davorin Verlič is lobster, which he prepares in many different ways, even combined with the local flavours of Pohorje.

In the centre of Maribor is Sedem, the restaurant of the Vocational College of Hospitality and Tourism Maribor. This is the first college restaurant in the country to operate according to an innovative business model, where students carry out all professional processes independently, under the supervision of mentors. But don’t let the fact that it’s a college restaurant mislead you, as Sedem has been included in that famous red book every year since the Michelin Guide first arrived in Slovenia.
